The golden land explores how photography has shaped and transformed the West in the collective imagination. Panoramic photographs reveal much more of the world than can be seen with the naked eye, presenting a version of reality that transcends, both literally and figuratively, the traditional boundaries of image-making. The experience of looking at a panoramic photograph mimics that of looking at the Western landscape itself, which is too vast to take it all in at one glance. The West is a place of natural splendor but its degradation over time has created some inhospitable landscapes.
